Update of MLU’s Connection to the German Research Network
Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is currently expanding its connection to the German Research Network (DFN). As part of the transition from the previous cluster connection to a standard connection, the available Internet bandwidth will be increased from the current 3 Gbit/s to 10 Gbit/s. The connection will continue to be configured redundantly, ensuring a high level of reliability in the future as well.
With this update, the university is responding to the steadily growing traffic volume. The Internet connection is particularly heavily used during normal working hours between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This can manifest itself, for example, in longer download times or slower transfer speeds. The additional bandwidth will significantly reduce such bottlenecks in the future and sustainably improve the network connection’s performance.
It is currently difficult to specify an exact timeline, as multiple service providers are involved and structural modifications are also required. However, implementation by the end of the first half of 2027 currently appears realistic.
Until the upgrade is complete, we recommend scheduling larger downloads and other bandwidth-intensive applications during off-peak hours whenever possible—such as in the early morning or late afternoon. During these times, network traffic is generally lower, so transfers can often be carried out more reliably and frequently at higher speeds.
With this new connection, the university is establishing a robust foundation to meet future demands in research, teaching, and administration, while also ensuring a sustainable supply of internet capacity.
